Rural America, BARN RAISING, NEAR MOUNT HOPE, HOLMES COUNTY, OHIO
More than 200 Amish carpenters raised this new barn near Mount Hope in Holmes County, Ohio on September 1. 2001. Assembled from precut wood that was delivered the day before the barn raising, the huge livestock barn was ready for evening milking the same day it was erected. The barn was built entirely with hand tools, though the Amish will occasionally use small chain saws to save time and get the job done. An Amish friend opined that if the “English” (non-Amish) had to rebuild the barn, it would take at least a month to figure out who should be on the planning committee that would decide how to build the barn! We can learn much from the practical, hard-working Amish.
