Barns, APPALACHIAN DOUBLE-CRIB BARN, OZARK NATIONAL FOREST, ARKANSAS I photographed this rustic old barn during a drive through Newton County, Arkansas in the heart of the Ozark Mountains. It was drizzling with rain, which intensified the colors and textures of the weathered wooden siding of the barn. A central driveway separating two pens or “cribs” identified the structure as an Appalachian double-crib barn, a style common in the southern Appalachian hill country. Although the barn appeared to be abandoned, it retained a quiet dignity earned by a century or more of service to several generations of Ozark pioneers. As Eric Sloane, dean of Americana, noted in his book, An Age Of Barns, “Barns are the shrines of a good life, and ought to be remembered”.
