Woodlands, SPRUCE FOREST, GAUDINEER SCENIC AREA, WEST VIRGINIA The Gaudineer Scenic Area, located in southern Randolph County near the Pocahontas County line in West Virginia, includes one of the finest remaining stands of red spruce, which once dominated the West Virginia highlands above four thousand feet before logging operations in the 1800s and early 1900s eliminated most of the spruce forests. The area is named for Don Gaudineer, a United States Forest Service Ranger who worked tirelessly during the 1930s on reforestation projects in this area before losing his life rescuing others during a fire.
