Bridges, Sunshine Skyway Bridge, FL
Ian drove to a remote area of Fort DeSoto State Park south of Saint Petersburg to capture this spectacular crimson dawn and the 29,000 foot Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which joins Saint Petersburg and Bradenton, Florida. Completed in 1987 after an earlier steel bridge collapsed after a ship collision, the Sunshine Skyway is the world’s longest cable-stayed concrete bridge. To protect the bridge from ship collisions, each of the six huge concrete piers is surrounded by a large concrete island, called a dolphin, designed to withstand the impact of an 87,000 ton vessel.
