Architecture, CLIFTON MILL, GREENE COUNTY, OHIO
Clifton Mill, Located in Greene County, Ohio in the village of Clifton, is one of the largest and oldest water-powered gristmills in America. It was built in 1802 by Owen Davis to take advantage of the surge of water falling into the gorge of the Little Miami River downstream from the mill. The undershot wheel has been replaced by a Leffel turbine, which produces 300 horsepower. The mill provided corn meal for Ohio’s federal troops during The Civil War, and continues to grind corn and flour today under the ownership of the Satariano family. During December, the mill and gorge are festooned with 3.2 million lights as part of a Christmas festival.
