Bridges, Hughes Bridge, PA
Ian was returning home to Ohio from a winter trip to West Virginia when he found this attractive covered bridge near I-79 in Washington County south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania has more than 240 covered bridges, the most of any state. Ohio has around 130, and Indiana and Vermont each have about 100 bridges. Why were the bridges covered? I like the explanation of one elderly bridge builder, who opined, “The bridges were covered, sir, for the same reason ladies wore hoop skirts and crinolines…to protect the underlying structures that are seldom seen but nevertheless appreciated.”
