Bridges,Roebling Suspension Bridge, OH The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, which spans the busy Ohio River between Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky, was designed by the famous bridge designer Roebling and built from 1856 to 1866. At that time, Cincinnati was America’s leading inland port, and a bridge was needed to accommodate growing interstate commerce and traffic. Charters required the bridge to have no piers, have a length of 1000 feet, and a deck clearance of at least 100 feet to allow steamboats safe passage. Construction of the bridge was interrupted by the Civil War. The bridge has withstood floods, storms, and countless barge collisions, and is used by thousands of vehicles each day.
