Bridges, Otway Bridge, OH
A field of mustard in early spring made an attractive foreground for this photograph of a covered bridge at Otway west of Portsmouth in Scioto County, Ohio. The Otway Bridge, which spans Scioto Brush Creek, was constructed in 1874 by the Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, Ohio. The attached steel bridge was built in 1823 to replace an open wooden bridge that spanned the millrace for a sawmill. The covered bridge has a Smith truss and a double Burr arch. Nearby is Shawnee State Forest, the largest area of contiguous woodland in the Buckeye State.
