Architecture, PONCE DE LEON HOTEL (FLAGLER COLLEGE), SAINT AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA The magnificent Ponce De Leon Hotel in Saint Augustine, Florida was commissioned in 1887 by entrepreneur Henry Flagler, a co-founder of the Standard Oil Company. The hotel was designed by architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings, who used the Spanish Renaissance Revival style to complement the historic surroundings of Saint Augustine, the oldest city in America. The ornate interior features stained glass, mosaics, and terra cotta relief by Louis Tiffany. The entire hotel was constructed from poured concrete. The success of the hotel waxed and waned, and the building was sold to Flagler College in 1967.
