Architecture, HILLFOREST MANSION, AURORA, INDIANA Architect Isiah Rogers designed Hillforest Mansion in Aurora, Indiana for Thomas Gaff, a prominent Aurora financier and industrialist, in 1853. The magnificent “steamboat Gothic” house sits high on a hill overlooking the Ohio River, in a manner similar to which Renaissance villas in Italy were built into the mountains. The home’s steamboat-influenced style is reflected in its circular porches and colonnades, curved doors and windows, and a circular rooftop belvedere. The interior also features a flying staircase that is reminiscent of the steamboats of the mid-1800s.
