Architecture, THE PINK HOUSE, CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA The Pink House, reputed to be the oldest building in Charleston, South Carolina, was built by John Breton around 1712 as a tavern. The walls of the tavern were surfaced with conch shells and had a pinkish glow. The inside doorways and stairways were only 18 inches wide. The tavern was in the center of Charleston’s “red light” district, and may have been used by practitioners of the world’s oldest profession. It currently houses an art gallery.
