Barns, WISCONSIN DAIRY BARN, TIOGA COUNTY, NEW YORK
Morning mist shrouded the lowlands when I chanced on this fine example of a Wisconsin Dairy Barn in Tioga County in western New York. The dual-pitch “gambrel” roof was a popular design since it allowed for more loft storage space than the simpler gable roof. The large number of windows provided more light for milking, feeding, and removing waste from the barn. The metal ridge ventilators allowed air to circulate and lessened the chance of the stored hay catching fire through spontaneous combustion. The barn additions were used to store barn implements, and the silo held winter silage for the dairy herd.
