Barns, STONE BARN, OLEY VALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA
The entire Oley Valley in Berks County, Pennsylvania has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of the many historic barns, gristmills, stone buildings and covered bridges that exist in this rural region of eastern Pennsylvania. This elegant bank barn, built from limestone blocks with decorative arches, and fitted with finely crafted wooden doors, is an artist’s dream. The original date stone reads “1793/GF” (George Focht). Stone barns like this are common in the mountainous Lake District in northwest England, where some of the structural features of Pennsylvania’s bank barns may have originated.
