Barns, SHAKER ROUND STONE BARN, MASSACHUSETTS
This magnificent round stone cow barn was built at the Hancock Shaker Village in western Massachusetts in 1826. The barn is 270 feet in circumference with walls up to 42 inches thick, and could hold 52 cows, all facing the central haymow feeding area. The flat roof is supported by chestnut posts. After a fire in 1864 destroyed the original conical wooden roof, the 12-sided wooden clerestory and cupola were added. The barn was neglected until the 1950s, when Shaker enthusiasts restored it, together with many other Shaker buildings, and the Hancock Shaker Village was opened to visitors in 1961.
