SLIDE PROGRAMS:

Each slide program runs from 45 to 60 minutes and is accompanied by an entertaining and informative commentary by Ian Adams. Programs are non-technical and designed for clubs and the general public. The following slide programs are currently available:

OHIO: A BICENTENNIAL PORTRAIT

Although much of Ohio has been developed for industrial, residential and agricultural use, a surprisingly large number and variety of natural and historical areas remain throughout the state. Based on Ian Adams' award-winning book, Ohio: A Bicentennial Portrait, this program highlights the rocks, flowers, factories, conveyances, public art, schools, barns and bridges, farms, seasons and wild places of The Buckeye State.

A PARADISE IN THE CITY:
CLEVELAND BOTANICAL GARDEN

Ian Adams has served as a freelance garden photographer for almost a decade at Cleveland Botanical Garden (CBG), and collaborated with Cleveland photographer Jennie Jones and writer Diana Tittle to produce A Paradise In The City: Cleveland Botanical Garden, published by Orange Frazer Press. Learn about the founding and history of CBG, visit the Madagascar Spiny Desert and the Costa Rica Rain Forest in the Eleanor Squire Glass House, join the kids in the award-winning Hershey Children's Garden, and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Western Reserve Herb Garden, the Rose Garden, Restorative Garden, Japanese and Woodland Gardens.

Wild and Scenic Florida

THE FLORIDAS

Beyond Florida's sunny beaches, Disney World, and Space Center lies another world: the other Florida. In this program, based on Ian Adams' book, The Floridas, published by Browntrout Publishers, you'll visit the mysterious Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp, travel to historic places like America's oldest city, Saint Augustine, and stroll through Key West, home to Ernest Hemingway. From remote fishing villages to bubbling freshwater springs, old sugar mills and historic homes, hotels and gardens, you'll gain a new perspective on the landscapes of the Sunshine State.

NEW ENGLAND PLACES

From the windswept heights of New Hampshire's Mount Washington to the rocky coast of Maine, from Vermont's rugged Northeast Kingdom to Massachusett's fishing villages, New England offers magnificent scenery, bucolic charm, and some of the finest fall color in America. Enjoy a hike up Mount Katahdin, the northern terminus of The Appalachian Trail, visit scenic Acadia National Park, some of the northeast's unspoiled fishing towns, and several of America's most photogenic lighthouses along the rugged Maine coast.

THE HIGH ALLEGHENIES

To the east and southeast of Ohio lie the western ramparts of the Appalachians, the High Alleghenies of West Virginia, western Pennsylvania and Maryland. Rising to nearly five thousand feet in West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest, these wild and scenic hills harbor black bears, dramatic waterfalls, deep canyons, wild rivers and spectacular floral displays of pink azalea, mountain laurel and rhododendron. In this slide program, you'll visit Allegheny National Forest, Swallow Falls, Ohiopyle State Park, Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley, Spruce Knob and the rugged Dolly Sods Wilderness.

WET AND WILD - THE WORLD OF WETLANDS

Researchers estimate that since 1780, agricultural, urban and industrial development has destroyed more than 50 percent of the 250 million acres of wetlands…marshes, swamps, bogs and fens…that existed in the United States in presettlement days. Yet over 100 million acres of wetlands remain, teeming with animal and plant life and home to over one-third of the endangered and threatened species in the U.S. This program showcases some of these last remaining wilderness areas in the eastern U.S., from the quaking bogs of the Northwoods and Midwest to the coastal marshes and vast cypress swamps of the Southeast.

SOUTHERN PLACES

This photographic journey takes us on a spring drive through some of the most scenic and historic areas in the land of Dixie. We'll visit historic antebellum plantations, churches and cemeteries; stroll through acres of dogwoods, wisteria and azaleas in some of the south's most beautiful gardens; discover remote fishing villages where shrimp and oyster boats ply the seas; explore mysterious cypress swamps and bayous; and marvel at the spectacular displays of wildflowers in the Texas hill country.

OHIO'S PUBLIC GARDENS AND ARBORETUMS

The Buckeye State is home to many beautiful public gardens. Through Ian's lens, we'll visit stately homes like Stan Hywet Hall And Gardens in Akron, 70 acres of landscaped gardens surrounding the former home of industrial mogul F. A. Seiberling, and Kingwood Center, founded by industrialist Charles King, where 40,000 tulips and 30,000 annuals bloom each year in the 26-acre gardens. Other notable Ohio public gardens include The Cleveland Botanical Garden, The Holden Arboretum, one of the largest arboretums in the U.S., and Franklin Park Conservatory, site of Ameriflora in 1991/1992.

THE NATIONAL ROAD

The 600-mile National Road, built from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois from 1806 to 1840, was America's first trans-Appalachian land link, and the only major highway commissioned and built by the United States government. For several decades The National Road was America's "Main Street" and gateway to the west, cutting through western Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. This slide program takes us on a tour of this historic road, including the bridges, tollhouses, inns and taverns, battlefields, old gas stations, towns and villages that recall The National Road's heyday.

GOSSAMER WINGS - THE WORLD OF DRAGONFLIES AND DAMSELFLIES

For several years, Ian Adams has devoted many summer hours to capturing on film and flash card the beauty of the many species of dragonflies and damselflies that can be found in the meadows, wetlands, rivers and streams of northeast Ohio. In this slide program you'll learn about the fascinating life histories of these delicate "jewels" of the insect world. Take a photo hike through a summer meadow and enjoy a wade along a river and enter the amazing world of darners, clubtails, skimmers, dancers and jewelwings. Ian Adams provides helpful hints on finding, observing and identifying dragonflies and damselflies during this entertaining and informative program.
