Photography and Printmaking Equipment
I
am often asked about the equipment I use to take photographs and
make color prints. I like to point out that it is the photographer
who really "makes" the photograph, and the best cameras
and lenses are not a substitute for hard work, a clear vision, great
light, and a strong picture composition. Invest in good photographic
tools, but try to avoid the common photographic equipment diseases,
including camera craving, lens lust, accessory angst, and, all too
common in this digital age, megapixelitis!
Here's what I'm currently using in my photography:
- Fuji GX680 6x8cm view cameras with Fujinon lenses from 65mm to 250mm
- Nikon D2X and Fuji S3 Pro digital cameras with Nikon 35mm lenses from 12mm to 500mm
- Gitzo G1348 and Manfrotto 3444 carbon fiber tripods with Arca
Swiss Monoball and Kirk BH-1 tripod heads
- Nikon circular polarizing filters
- Pentax Digital Spotmeter and Minolta Color/flash meter
- Delkin 4GB and 1GB compact flash cards and Fortress 40 GB portable hard drive for digital images and Fuji Velvia and Provia films
- Tamrac and Lowepro camera bags
For image processing and making color prints I use:
- 2.4 gHz AMD Athlon and 800 mHz Pentium III personal computers, each with 2 GB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive and 48x Plexwriter CD/DVD burners, plus a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop with 3.0 gHz Pentium IV processor and a Netgear wireless connection, plus Maxtor external hard drives for storage
- Photoshop CS2 and a Wacom 6x8 graphics tablet
- Canon Realis SX50 and Sanyo PLC-XU36 digital projectors and Powerpoint for digital programs
- Minolta DiMage Scan Elite 5400 and Scan Multi Pro film scanners and Epson Perfection 4990 flatbed scanner for scanning color transparencies
- Gretag-Macbeth Eye-One Photo and Beamer color calibration system
- Epson Stylus Pro 9800 inkjet printer with Ultrachrome K3 pigment inks, Epson Premium Luster and Enhanced Matte and Moab Entrada papers, plus Colorbyte Software's ImagePrint 6.1 RIP with Phatte Black option
