Photography and Printmaking Equipment
I am often asked about the equipment I use to take photographs and make color prints. I like to point out that it is the photographer who really "makes" the photograph, and the best cameras and lenses are not a substitute for hard work, a clear vision, great light, and a strong picture composition. Invest in good photographic tools, but try to avoid the common photographic equipment diseases, including camera craving, lens lust, accessory angst, and, all too common in this digital age, megapixelitis!
Here's what I'm currently using in my photography:
- Nikon D700 and Nikon D7000 digital cameras with Nikon lenses from 12mm to 400mm, Sigma APO 180mm Macro lens
- Sony Alpha 850 digital camera with Sony/Zeiss lenses from 16mm to 300mm
- Canon Powershot G11 digital camera
- Gitzo G1348 and Manfrotto 3444 carbon fiber tripods with Kirk BH-1 tripod heads
- Nikon and Sony/Zeiss circular polarizing filters
- WhiBal white balance card
- Delkin 8GB and 4GB compact flash cards and SD cards
- Tamrac and Lowepro camera bags
For image processing and making color prints I use:
- 2.8 gHz Pentium Core Duo and 800 mHz Pentium III personal computers with Windows XP, each with 4 GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive and CD/DVD burners, plus a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop with 3.0 gHz Pentium IV processor and a Netgear wireless connection, plus a 4 TB Drobo external drive backup system
- Eizo ColorEdge CE240W LCD monitor
- Adobe Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3.0, Photomatix Pro and HDR Express
- Canon Realis SX50 digital projector and Microsoft's Powerpoint for digital slide programs
- Minolta DiMage Scan Multi Pro film scanner and Epson Perfection 4990 flatbed scanner for scanning color transparencies
- Gretag-Macbeth Eye-One Photo color calibration system
- Epson Stylus Pro 9800 inkjet printer with Ultrachrome K3 pigment inks, Epson Premium Luster, Harman Gloss FB AL papers and Epson Canvas, plus Colorbyte Software's ImagePrint 7.0 RIP with Phatte Black option
